Groaning or howling sounds that change with road speed are typical in higher mileage Volvos. Often, a poor alignment can cause tires to wear unevenly and "cup," (Image) which is one reason this noise comes about. But what if you rotate the tires and the sound doesn't change? Most likely, a bearing has failed. Some fail by getting louder as they age, while some fail by getting loose, allowing the wheel to dangerously wiggle around. I've seen failed bearings exhibit this, however they weren't any noisier than a standard bearing.

It's important to check your vehicle's suspension for any play or looseness to avoid this kind of failure, as it can result in out of spec alignment, or a wheel falling off while driving.

Mike Rivera will show you how to replace the wheel bearing/hub assembly on a P2 Volvo XC70 AWD.
