FCP Euro Service Kits

FCP Euro Kits

There are two things that you can guarantee a Volkswagen will need during its lifespan. Those are fuel, and new ignition coils.

If you recently grabbed a set of red top Genuine VW Audi ignition coils, you might be wondering how to install them. Fortunately, this is one of the easiest repairs you can make on a German vehicle, and nearly every late-model VW, Porsche, and Audi vehicle use the same part.

This guide is based on a 2013 Volkswagen CC equipped with the four-cylinder 2.0 TSI engine but applies to older FSI 4-cylinder powerplants as well like in the 2006 Audi A3.

What Are The Symptoms Of Needing To Replace Volkswagen 2.0t Ignition Coils?

A P0300-P0304 diagnostic code on a 4-cylinder engine indicates a misfire. Driving with a persistent misfire code is usually accompanied by a flashing check engine light (CEL), meaning you should stop driving as soon as possible. If a coil pack has completely failed, the lack of spark will allow raw fuel to pass into the catalytic converter, causing it to overheat and fail.

Utilizing the red version of this coil pack may not provide any gains over the standard black version, but it looks a lot cooler and is actually the cheapest Genuine replacement.

Volkswagen 2.0t Ignition Coil Replacement Interval

My CC's maintenance schedule dictates spark plug replacement every 60,000 miles, however, your vehicle may vary. There is no replacement interval for ignition coils, but many Volkswagen enthusiasts agree it's a good idea to change them well before 100,000 miles as preventative maintenance.

Volkswagen 2.0t Ignition Coil Replacement Process

First, remove the engine cover by pulling it up at each corner.

Next, disconnect the wiring harness by pressing the retainer tabs toward the firewall until you hear a click. The whole wiring harness will pull back as a unit when all of the connectors are released.

Then, firmly grab the coil pack and pull upwards until it slides out. These are held in by friction only - no fasteners are utilized.

Finally, with the coil packs removed, the spark plugs are accessible and can be inspected or replaced.

That's it, the process is as simple as that. If you have any questions or comments about VW ignition coil replacement, please leave them in the comments section below.
