FCP Euro Kits

The Elevate upper intake manifold is a great addition for anyone building a P1 Volvo for maximum performance. The cast aluminum construction is better engineered for high boost setups and allows air to flow faster and smoother. Elevate's design includes port-matched outlets which perfectly mate up against the lower manifold. The inlet opening is also slightly larger to accommodate both the 65mm Volvo throttle body and the 70mm Porsche throttle body.

You can find a link to the Porsche 70mm throttle body on our site FCP Euro.

Installation is not necessarily difficult, but the process is involved. The following guide will step you through removal of the stock intake manifold and installation of the Elevate unit.

Necessary Tools:

  • 13mm wrench
  • flat head screw driver
  • T25 and T30 torx bits
  • 8mm and 10mm sockets with ratchet

Removal of Factory Manifold:

  1. Disconnect your battery and familiarize yourself with the engine bay components.

  2. The first step will require removing the stock intake box. If your vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket intake, skip to step number 9.
Begin with removing the ECU cover by pulling it straight up.

  3. Disconnect the two ECU harnesses by pivoting the red levers 180 degrees.

  4. Using the T30 torx bit, remove the four screws which hold the ECU to the factory air box. The two lower screws may be tricky to access. A small ratchet with extension may be necessary if you cannot fit your hands in the available space.

  5. Disconnect the intake manifold vacuum fitting by depressing the red ring with a 13mm wrench and pulling the hose straight out.

  6. Separate the MAF housing from the ECU box by removing the two T25 torx screws. To gain better access, you may wish to unplug the MAF sensor and disconnect the intake pipe by loosening the band clamp.

  7. Disconnect the intake snorkel by removing the two 10mm bolts, then pulling the lower elbow straight out of the air box.

  8. Using a bit of force, carefully pull the air box upwards to separate the three pins from the release tabs on the lower manifold. While removing the air box, it is easiest to pull it out at a 45 degree angle towards the left side of the engine bay. This process can require a lot of force. Be extremely careful as the box will make contact with the the stock intake manifold and back of the radiator fan.

  9. With the air box out, loosen the band clamp which holds the intercooler piping to the throttle body.

  10. Pry off the remaining two vacuum hoses connected to the intake manifold.

  11. Remove the six 8mm bolts which hold the intake manifold in place. These bolts are located on the underside of the manifold.

  12. Before removing the entire manifold, unplug the wiring clip from the back of the throttle body unit.

  13. With the intake manifold out of the car, you can easily remove the throttle body using your T25 torx bit.

Installation of Elevate Manifold:

  1. Reattach your throttle body to the Elevate intake manifold using the extended bolts. This is an ideal time to install an upgraded 70mm Porsche throttle body

    enter image description here

  2. Align the new gasket on the lower manifold before positioning the Elevate upper manifold in place.

    enter image description here

  3. Replace the six manifold bolts and reconnect the vacuum hoses near the throttle body. Proceed to follow the removal instructions in reverse order to reassemble the intake. Make sure all wiring clips and harnesses are secured before reconnecting the battery. Also be certain that all vacuum hoses and pipes are tightly fastened prior to starting the car.

Overall impressions:

Elevate claims an improvement of 26hp. While I have not had the car tested before and after, my butt dyno notices an immediate improvement. Power delivery is smooth and the car seems to pull stronger through the rising RPMs.

When I was running the plastic intake manifold, I was always concerned about high boost pressure and heat causing the unit to fail. That worry is now obsolete with the aluminum manifold installed.

In addition to performance, the new manifold is a cosmetically appealing piece in the engine bay. I opted for a unit which advertises Elevate's name, but you may also purchase an unbranded manifold to maintain a stock appearance. While an upgraded intake manifold may not be the first performance part you wish to install on your P1 Volvo, I highly recommend the Elevate unit for anyone building a high horsepower beast.
