Here’s How Fast A 2017 MK7 Volkswagen GTI Laps Lime Rock Park
We ran our completely stock, project MK7 GTI around Lime Rock Park for a timed lap. Here's how it did.
The MK7 GTI is one of the most fun, capable platforms we've tested in a while. It has the simple essence of a Mark 1 GTI, with all the performance and modern creature comforts you'd expect from a vehicle produced in 2017. We've got plans to address so many different components of the vehicle—from engine, to suspension, to chassis, to brakes—but to see how much of a difference those upgrades actually made, we needed to time a lap with the car as-is.
Our guy Nate Vincent, Director of Motorsport and driver of the #72 Volkswagen GTI TCR in the Pirelli World Challenge series, took the GTI out for a hot lap at our favorite race track, Lime Rock Park. Check out the video below for how it did.
Overall, and we've said it before, the car is awesome. It just has a few weak spots, like some of the handling characteristics, braking, and lack of exhaust-volume on track. But all of that will all be addressed with help from our partners 034Motorsport, LIQUI MOLY, and SACHS Performance.
By the time we're done, we're hoping to shave at least 5 seconds off the lap time you saw above. Follow along to stay in the loop on our project cars and get every new video pushed to your inbox.
