FCP Euro Service Kits

FCP Euro Kits

I had a driver side door mirror that looked like the glass was peeling away from the backing, creating a visual annoyance. You can see the “peeling” effect mostly on the left and along the bottom of the mirror in the picture below:

While I could still drive with this distraction it was getting annoying each time I looked at it so eventually I gave in and dealt with the problem. I figured it could get worse over time so I tackled the job when I had about an hour of free time.

Ready to replace the mirror glass?

Luckily I had what appeared to be a new replacement mirror glass in a box of parts from the previous owner (otherwise I would have already ordered the part so it’s ready for the job). From behind the new glass you can see a metal wire brace being used to secure the mirror and I figured a thin angled pick could help free the old mirror by tugging along parts of the brace:

I first tried to pop out the mirror with my fingers but that wasn’t successful and led me to believe that the previous owner tried this as well. The glass seemed to detach from the backing in the same areas each time I tugged on the glass. So I used a thin pick to tug at different locations of the metal brace that I could see behind the old glass while using my other hand to maintain outward pressure to help release it as I go:

The old mirror eventually popped off and you can see in the mirror housing a circular backing with a beveled ribbed edge where the brace catches: should be easy to pop in the new glass! The mirror I worked on had an integrated heating element so I needed to also unplug the 2 electrical spade connections:

Upon inspection of the old glass (left) and new glass (right), I noticed a difference in shape, location of spade connections and identification numbers. I realized I had a new passenger side mirror (right) when I’ve got a bad driver side mirror (left):

After doing a test fit to ensure the shape difference didn’t seem to have any obvious obstructions, I decided to give it a shot. I plugged in the electrical spade connections and carefully pop in the new passenger side glass onto the driver side mirror housing until I hear audible “pops”. I gently tug on it to ensure it’s secure and inspect the outcome:

The replacement looks great! There isn’t much of a noticeable difference in using the other side’s glass and the power adjustments work without issues.
