Cabin air filters never get the love they deserve. Most used vehicles I encounter have the original filter installed well past its expiration date. With this comes reduced airflow through the vents, and the potential for some serious odor. A general recommendation for cabin filter replacement is every 30,000 miles, or more frequently if you live in a dusty or dirty area today we'll be tacking this on a Mercedes-Benz using this air filter from Mann.

Tools

  • T15 Torx Driver
  • Flathead Screwdriver

Procedure

Position yourself on the passenger side of the vehicle. You will be working under the glovebox area, so some knee pads may be useful if you're kneeling outside of the car.

Remove the three T15 torx screws holding the panel under the glovebox to the vehicle.

Unplug the footwell illumination LED, then set the trim panel aside.

There are two metal clips holding the filter on to the airbox, indicated by the circles in the following picture. Pop these off with a flathead screwdriver or equivalent prying tool. Slide the white filter retaining tab to the left, unlocking the filter from the airbox.

Pull down on the filter, removing it from the vehicle.

Insert a replacement filter, re-install the metal clips, slide the white locking tab to the right, plug in the footwell light, and install the footwell trim panel using the three T15 screws.
