Changing your own engine oil is the perfect Saturday Morning DIY project that every owner should perform on their own vehicle. When you perform your own service you get the satisfaction of knowing the job is done correctly and you used the correct quality of parts on your vehicle. Today's featured vehicle is a 2013 S60 T5 AWD (P3).

The 36mm socket is essential because the intake manifold casting limits access to the oil filter housing. Start by loosening the oil filter housing cap.

This will cause any oil that is in the filter housing to drain into the crankcase. Once you've cracked the housing loose, continue to slowly unscrew the filter housing. Slowly unscrewing it helps minimize the possibility of making a mess of the filter housing area.

Coat the oil filter housing o-ring with fresh oil and replace the old filter with the new one provided in the kit. Coating the o-ring with oil helps minimize the potential for ripping the o-ring when you re-install the housing cover.

Lift the vehicle to gain access to the lower engine shield, it is retained with six T30 Torx screws.

The oil drain plug has a 17mm head and an aluminum crush washer, and that washer should be replaced each time the drain plug is removed.

Remove the plug and drain the oil in a suitable catch basin. When the draining slows to an inconsistent drip, place a new washer on the drain plug and install it on the pan. Do not overtorque!

Now it's time to refill the engine with your oil of choice. I used Pento High Performance 5w-30 and the bottle is designed with an integrated spout making it easier to pour without spilling.

Start by refilling the vehicle with about 5 liters of oil. Give the oil approximately 10 minutes to drain into the crankcase and then check the level. The goal is to not overfill the engine and if the level is incorrect, add a 1/2 liter more and check again.

The last step is to reset your maintenance indicator.

Maintenance Indicator Reset Steps
Do not step on the brake pedal at any point during this procedure

  • Place Key in Key Slot and press once to enter "Key position 1"
  • Press the trip reset button until it reads "T1"
  • Press and hold the trip reset button in the cluster while pushing the start button so it enters "Key position 2" (You'll know its in key position 2 when all of the lights on the dash lights illuminate)
  • Once the yellow "i" indicator light flashes 2-3 times, release the trip reset button
  • Start the vehicle and verify that the maintenance warning is no longer present

You've just successfully completed an oil change on your P3 Volvo!
