FCP Euro Kits

Anyone with a '98 or older P80 Volvo probably feels a bit left out of the game when it comes to OEM side markers. The hole in the fender is currently covered up by a moderately ugly VOLVO badge that fades and discolors over time. This article applies to the '93+ Volvo 850 and '98 S70/V70/C70 models.

Tools

  • Wire splices
  • Long stick (at least as long as from the corner blinker to the new side blinker hole)
  • Pliers to Grab the cables or skinny fingers
  • Nylon or other non abrasive interior trim tool.
  • Adhesive remover
  • Multimeter (optional)
  • Adhesive tape
  • Electrical Tape
  • Time - About 30 minutes.

Procedure

Remove the old side badge. This should be done carefully as not all the paint under it will be hidden by the new side lamp. I used my nylon trim tools to get it started from the side while I pried downwards with another one. With this badge taken off there will no doubt be some nasty foam residue left over. Here we find a healthy application of elbow grease and your favorite adhesive solvent. Make sure what you use is safe on paint. (Test in a discrete location first)

Next move to the front of the car and remove the corner lamp. Using the trim tool or other wedge like device gently depress on the corner lamps retainer tab. It will be butted up against the head lamp and have a perfect place to insert your tool of choice. Take special note the plastic on these corner lamps is VERY fragile from years of exposure and there is a strong change you can break this tab in the process. So use finesse. The corner lamp will need to be pulled forward and freed form its mounts.

The pictures attached are all from a 1998 S70 and your car will more then likely have a similar wire harness color layout. However the prudent DIYer will double check this with a multi meter. I tested the circuit by activating the blinker and checking that the voltage pulsated.

Next comes running the wires from the front corner back to the new signals position. For this I happened to have a hood prop handy and it worked really well. However a long stick, fishing pole, thin curtain rod etc will do the trick.
Making a small tape loop around the end of the stick. I attached my wiring and left about six to eight inches hanging down from the end of the stick. Only lightly adhere the wiring as you will need to pull it through this in a moment.

Having fed the wire into the fender, pull it out the hole where the new one is going and then retract your chosen stick, leaving about 6" extra on either side trim the wire to your liking. Now you will need to unwrap the loom for the stock blinker wires. It should be bound with electrical tape you can undo by hand and then split the plastic guard down its pre-cut line. Now Utilize the wire taps to connect your new wire to the ones already in place.

Repeat this step on the other end  and give your lights a test before taping everything up. When it's all working fully cover your work with electrical tape to help keep out corrosion.
