FCP Euro Service Kits

FCP Euro Kits

There are many makes and models which are popular in racing where roll cage kits are available - BMW e36, e46, Porsche 911, and Subaru WRX for rallying. The tubes are pre-bent and notched, and all you need to do is weld in the kit. No such luck for our Mercedes-Benz C300. For this build, we have commissioned Peter Agapoglou, owner and cage builder at Autosport CT to keep our drivers safe.

The process starts by getting the seat mounted- usually as far to the center of the cabin as possible. Next, you need to fit the main hoop. The main hoop is the most crucial tube and the most difficult to make since it has multiple bends and is the longest tube in the roll cage. Almost every other tube connects to the main hoop, and it is also where the race seat harnesses will connect, so it's crucial to get this one right.

You can also see the half round plinth boxes being mocked up here. When you build a cage, you want the tubes as close to the body (and as far away from the driver) as possible. All of the tubes also need to be welded 360* at each junction. The junctions at the roof line are almost impossible to get welding equipment into. For this reason, the cage is built on top of plinth boxes, tacked in place, then eventually the plinth boxes are temporarily removed, top junctions properly welded and then the cage is raised set on top of the plinth boxes again for final welding.

It may seem like it is as simple as bending tubes and welding them in place, but there is lots of thought and planning than goes into the design of the roll cage. In the next post, you'll start to see the cage down-stays and A-pillar bars set in place.
