The Porsche 996 is well known for timing system issues. Over time, old plastic degrades and cast aluminum parts fatigue, which creates multiple points of potential failure. Ignoring the signs of failure can quickly turn into catastrophic engine damage.

Porsche 996 911 Timing Chain Kit Replacement Symptoms

The timing system on the Porsche 996 can fail in quite a few ways. When there is a failure in the timing system, it can cause the engine to skip timing and possibly do irreparable damage. This happens when considerable slack begins to form in the timing chain, when the cast aluminum IMS main chain tensioner breaks, when the plastic tensioner guide pressure pin breaks, or when the tensioner guide pads wear out. When this happens, some of the symptoms you will see are:

  • Engine misfires
  • Rattling noise emanating  from the engine
  • Catastrophic engine damage

Porsche doesn't specify a mileage in which to replace the timing system components. You should replace these at the first signs of failure to prevent damage to your engine. It's also a good idea to do this whenever you have the engine removed.

Replacing your timing system is one of the more difficult jobs on the Porsche 996 as it requires removal of the engine. On a scale of one to five, this job ranks at a five. And you can expect it to take ten hours or more to complete.
