Question: A computer scan is suggesting that the throttle body should be replaced on a Volvo S80. The throttle body was changed only 3 years ago, so would it be possible that the throttle body would need replacing again?

Answer: Anything is possible. I know that's an extremely vague and simplistic answer but if you're getting codes specifically related to the throttle body such as the "throttle body position sensor" you will more than likely have to replace the throttle body.

One note from personal experience however, my 2000 BMW 528i had a communication issue with the throttle body (was getting codes for all sensors on the driver side of the engine bay). Needless to say, my car would not start. All these sensors and modules shared a common fuse in the engines DME compartment. It took quite some time and some reading through the Bentley manual to figure out which one but all that was required to resolve the issue was replace the fuse. Everything since then has been as good as new.

Moral of the story, trace everything back to ensure that there are no frayed or exposed wires, burnt out fuses, etc. It's definitely rare for a throttle body that new to just stop working and I would personally take the time to ensure that there isn't something else causing the problem first before condemning the throttle body entirely.
